We’re going into hibernation for the holidays but, like that Christmas favourite Die Hard, will be back with a vengeance in the new year.
It might not feel like it in wintry Yorkshire right now, but 2024 is set to be the hottest year on record. With atmospheric CO2 now more than 50% above pre-industrial concentrations and global emissions still rising, that’s not a title it’s likely to hold for long. In the wake of November’s deeply underwhelming Cop29, it’s easy to get discouraged.
But there are reasons for cautious optimism. In the UK, decarbonising the electricity supply by 2030 is possible, if extremely challenging. Work is progressing to decarbonise transport, industry and heating – just not as urgently as required. And companies and organisations of all sizes are getting to grips with reducing their own emissions and bringing innovations to market to help others do the necessary.
I launched Othersfield Sustainable Communications this autumn to help like-minded businesses share and promote what they’re doing, so they can make a real impact for the years to come. Thanks to everyone who has helped get things up and running, and those who have already been in touch to discuss their stories and projects.
Merry Christmas to all, and here’s to a prosperous and sustainable 2025 and beyond.
